2 November 17: Lucky number 3

I’m not a huge fan of superstition but I am fascinated by it.

Lucky & unlucky numbers intrigue me because systems have been known to factor these in. For example, many hotels in the States don’t have a 13th floor (scared of 13? You have a clear case of triskaidekaphobia).

On the other hand, the number seven is universally venerated whilst three is so lucky in China that in 2004 a man paid $215,000 for the mobile number of 133-3333-3333.

Three is certainly a lovely number to work with when I’m doing shelfies, like this one that I set against Farrow & Ball’s gorgeous Radicchio 96 paint. I picked three books, three white ornaments, three buttons and three shells (only two cacti but I chose the one on the left for its three arms) – not for superstition, you understand, but purely for aesthetics.

Do you have a thing about numbers?
