19 December 17: Politics CAN be fun…

I was eight when Margaret Thatcher came to power. In the run-up, my brother Tom (11) and I were coached to tell perplexed canvassers – blue, red or otherwise – that the answer to the ‘Can we rely on your vote?’ question was ‘Mum says there’s one for you and one for the others.’ Confusing the pollsters was a kind of sport in our household. One balmy night after the election, our true blue neighbours had a celebratory garden party and Tom helped them to make it a memorable function by playing The Red Flag on his tenor horn on repeat out of his nearby bedroom window. See? Politics CAN be fun.
