7 January 18: The brown pullati

Hello from Sunday.

Over the holidays I watched Gladiator again (one of my top five films – go on, test me on the script). So many amazing touches, like the slo-mo ending to the opening battle scene, paced so you can truly digest the pointlessness and sacrifice of war, and the clever syncopation of music against the chants of ‘Maximus! Maximus!’ Never ceases to tingle my spine.

Oh, and the colours. Even brown looks amazing in that film. I recently read that in Roman times, brown clothing was associated with the lower classes or barbarians. The term for the plebeians, or urban poor, was ‘pullati’: literally “those dressed in brown”.

Brown got it in the neck even then.
