I have a question for you: is a book masculine or feminine?
Ships are shes and so, I believe, are cars (we used to have a feisty little white Renault 5 called Blanche when I was little and she was most definitely a she). What about books? Coffee table books are, I think, male (a bit like Sir David Attenborough) while vintage Penguins are like a mixed bunch of students (colourful and varied). What, then, of my new book, Shelfie? When I opened a box containing six copies yesterday and held one in my excited little mitts, it definitely felt like I’d been delivered a girl. A girl who’s full of hope and ready to take on the world. That’s her rather than me: I’m nervous but excited and hoping some of her confidence will rub off onto me as we head towards 12 July when the book actually comes out (available on pre-order now, link in biog). Thanks for all your love, guys. Can’t wait for you to meet her.
