Shelfie with vintage blue glass bottles

When I see coloured glass medicine bottles, I remember those times when I was a kid and went to the chemist with my district nurse mum to fetch some strange tonic or medicine for a patient.

I guess that’s where my peculiar nostalgia for glass bottles comes from. You probably won’t be surprised to hear that I have a burgeoning collection of these little beauties.

My favourites are the blue variety, which I love for their varying sizes, shapes and shades.

I enjoy clustering them together and seeing one through another, transparent layer upon layer, a communion of clear blue. I think they work particularly well in a bathroom, especially when displayed with shells, starfish or coral.

This display is in the living room at Colour File HQ where it makes me think of a Victorian explorer returning home from a voyage with treasures to impress friends (“So WHERE exactly did you find that hand?…”)
