19 December 18: The joy of stuff with your name on it

One of the great joys of present buying in 2018 is personalisation.

I don’t know about you but I LOVE a simple but stylish monogram. And as for giving me something with my name on it? You’ve hit the gift jackpot and earned your place in the present hall of fame as far as I’m concerned. I think this joy comes from the fact that when I was a kid in the 1970s, finding anything with Martha on it was impossible. I remember going on a Sunday school trip to Bognor when I was six and buying a pearlescent pin badge with Helen (one of my middle names) on it because they didn’t have Martha (they certainly didn’t have Myfanwy either…🏴󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿). If I was looking today, I’d be certain to find Martha because it’s on-trend and we are now well-catered for. This morning I looked on the Office for National Statistics website to chart the rise in popularity of my name over the years. As you’ll see (second pic) it was still in the top 100 but on a downward trajectory from the early 1900s to around 1915 (maybe it was simply too Victorian?) then started to pick up again around 2006 – and it hasn’t stopped since. What’s been the best thing you’ve ever had your name written on?
