20 December 18: Quotes that go everywhere with you

Do you ever suffer from ‘ear worms’, when you can’t seem to get a tune out of your head?

I have that with phrases, too. One that I’ve always loved, ever since my sojourns to @tate_britain as a teenager during school lunch breaks, is by artist and poet William Blake. He famously said, ‘I must create a system or be enslaved by another man’s.’ So simple yet spring-loaded with empowerment. I think it pertains to so many areas of life because it is, essentially, about having the nerve to kick back and swim against the tide, whether it’s deciding to leave a job to go it alone, breaking into new social groups or bowing out gracefully from tricky relationships. Maybe even something as simple as saying, ‘I like arranging things in colour order because it gives me joy but I don’t need you to like it too.’ Do you have any quotes that are your constant companion?
