24 March 19: Why are butterflies colourful?

Who loves butterflies?

I know not everyone is a fan of animals that flap and flutter (a butterfly phobia is known as lepidopterophobia, BTW) but I adore them.

I’ve loved them ever since I spent endless hours drawing (and colouring in) red admirals as a child and drew a template for my mum’s butterfly tattoo that she had on her 60th birthday.

The breathtaking colours of butterflies aren’t just there to inspire seven-year-olds to colour in. They’re there for sparring, courting, and hiding, for finding family, attracting mates, for blending in and standing out. Yet again, it shows us how much colour actually does. Amazing.
