The healing power of gerbera flowers

What is it about gerberas?

Maybe it’s something to do with the fact that they look like flowers a child would draw – big petals, a bold centre and a demeanour that makes you think of sunshine and life and joy.

Apparently gerberas contain coumarin, a chemical that helps them fight off beasties. It’s the same compound that’s in warfarin, an anticoagulant drug that helps to inhibit the formation of blood clots and DVT by inhibiting the synthesis of clotting vitamin K.

A while back I told you about the healing chemicals contained within sweet peas, too. Who’d have thought that such pretty flowers would have such potent, health-giving potential?
